MISSION STATEMENT

Welcome to the University of Washington. You have studied long hours in your undergraduate and medical school coursework to get to this point in your training. You've come to the University of Washington for the opportunity to learn how to care for patients at a premiere academic training center. You've come here to learn both from your patients and from your colleagues. You've come here to learn the judgment and skills needed to be an excellent physician. The Housestaff Association is a non-profit organization working to promote issues important to residency life. The association is run on a purely voluntary basis by residents and fellows without faculty appointments. Our goal is to provide a forum for discussion and a vehicle for resident consensus. We want to improve our training experience. We are advocates for our education and the opportunity to care for patients.

Residency is a unique and, at times, demanding opportunity. The quality of your experience depends upon communication. You and your patients communicate. Similarly, you may have a didactic and collegial relationship with your attendings. Yet this dynamic of patient-resident-attending does not always operate smoothly. Improving the dialogue requires that you get involved! Reflect on a good mentor. Recall a profound patient interaction. Help yourself and us by spending a few moments adding to one of our billboards. Start a discussion! Let your colleagues know what you care about. Help make a difference. After all, isn't that why you chose this profession?
